Magazines are very visual, with photos a main attraction. Make sure you use high resolution (at least 300 dpi) graphics that have been converted to a CMYK format. Our presses print in CMYK, so you should convert the file profile to CMYK so you will have a better idea of how your graphics will print. Most web graphics and photographs are in a RGB color format. The colors may shift when converted to CMYK. Use large photos that will capture your audience’s attention.
Decide on the binding style for your magazine. While we can do perfect bound, plastic coil, saddle stitch, and wire-o binding, most magazines use either perfect bound or saddle stitch. Be aware of how the binding style you choose will impact any photos that spread across two pages.
With perfect binding, a portion of the edge of the page will be bound in the spine. Thus, you need to be very careful of what portion of our photo is right in the middle of the spread. If it is someone’s face or eyes, it will be noticeable that a portion of the photo is missing. However, if you move the face to the left or right of the center of the spread, most people won’t notice if a little bit of the photo is caught in the spine.
This is less of an issue with saddle stitching, but the images can shift a little when printing. Thus, it is a good idea even with saddle stitching to not have people’s faces in the center of the spread.
Many people will look at the table of contents to decide whether to go through the magazine. So make sure that you spend a lot of time making the table of contents look appealing and have catchy titles for your articles.
Although many larger magazines use the same paper stock for both the cover and the inside pages, your magazine is likely to be more of a speciality magazine. Consider using a heavier cover — 80# cover stock is a good option. For the inside pages, you can use anything from 60# uncoated stock to 100# gloss or matte text stock.

Looking for inspiration for your magazine? Check out other magazines that you find attractive. What is it about the design that you like? How do they handle photos? How are articles layed out? Do they have large margins in the magazine? Do this review before you start laying out your magazine, so you don’t have to go back and make major changes to the design.
Design your magazines in spreads. Your readers will be reading the magazine in spreads, so make sure you are designing it as such. You will be able to see if pages don’t look good side by side or if two advertisements from similar sponsors are side by side.
