This storybook printing project contains a delightful selection of stories by Bill Medley and Mary Bonn. We’ll let the authors explain, in their whimsical prose, where the tile of the book came from:
“In early years on the farm, we often enjoyed the shade of a giant hickory nut tree that stood alone in the large field, north of the house. It took a hike to get to the tree, but once there, its huge canopy offered cool relief from the July sun. You could swing from its low branches then let them toss you back to the ground.
Come fall, the nuts rained down and collected, shelled, cracked, and painstakingly picked from those hard inner shells, would be used in fudge and candy made by our mother. The ole hickory nut tree is long gone.
Felled by a wicked lightning strike, eventually cut down, and its scorched logs cleared. There is no sign of it today. But in the spirit of that magnificent tree, we have revived stories of earlier days, real and imagined, and present them here. Memories, like trees, are sometimes struck down by the lightning of advancing years.
All one can do is “saw them up” and turn them into paper where they will last a few more years. They’re not as tasty as fudge, not as hot and brilliant as a burning hickory log, but warm nonetheless, and a tad delicious.”
