Tips for Your Funeral or Wedding Program Printing Project

While programs, including funeral programs, wedding programs, and sports programs, can be bound with any of our four binding styles, they are often printed using a saddle stitch binding. Thus, the tips that follow will discuss saddle-stitched program printing:

  • Saddle stitching requires printing in increments of four pages, with a maximum page count of 80 pages. Two pages are printed on the front and two pages on the back of a large sheet of paper. The paper is then folded in half, gathered together with the other pages, and stapled in the spine of the program. If your final page count is not in an increment of four pages, you may want to add blank pages to the inside front cover and/or inside back cover. Adding a page to the inside front cover will shift all of the spreads in your program, so make sure that doesn’t cause any issues with your design. If your program has advertising in it, you can add additional advertisements to fill up the blank pages. This may work well with sports programs and other programs. For wedding and funeral program, you probably won’t have any advertising. But you can also add more pages of photos to the program. If you don’t like any of those alternatives, you can always select another binding style. With the other three binding styles, we print in increments of two pages, with printing on the front and back of each sheet of paper.
  • Critical text and graphics should be located at least one half inch from the edge of the page. While it’s natural to try to get as much information on a page as possible, your layout will look more professional with large margins and white space on the page. Readers find too much text on a page difficult to read. Large margins also ensure that text is not cut off when the program is trimmed down to size.
  • Programs often have lots of photos in them. Make sure that all of the photos are high resolution (at least 300 dpi) and are in a CMYK (cyna-magenta-yellow-black) color profile. Cameras and phones use an RGB (red-green-blue) color profile. Printing presses print using CMYK, so the machines will force printing to that profile. If you convert the photos yourself, you have more control over how the final picture prints.
  • When designing, be careful of the placement of graphics or text across two pages. The two middle pages of the program and the outside front and back cover are printed on the same sheet of paper, so there will be no issues on those pages. Everywhere else in the program, the spread is printed on two sheets of paper. While the alignment will be very close, there are situations where it will be noticeable if the alignment is off by even a small amount. For instance, never put one word and especially one letter on two pages. Also, be careful of putting a person’s face on two pages. It is better to offset the person’s face on one page or the other, but not in the middle of both pages.
  • Especially with saddle stitch program printing, you need to choose your paper stocks carefully. If you have a large number of pages and select heavy paper, the program can get very bulky. The more pages you have in your program, the thinner the paper you should choose. We suggest using 100# text for 8 to 32 pages, 80# text for 36 to 60 pages, and 70# text for 64 to 80 pages. Unsure of what cover stock to use with text stock? We recommend 80# cover for 70# and 80# text stock and 100# cover with 100# text stock. We also recommend sending for our free sample package. The package contains samples of our four binding styles — saddle stitch, perfect bound, plastic coil, and wire-o. The plastic coil book has samples of all of our paper stocks.
  • Let a few people review your program before sending it to print. If you’ve worked closely with the program, you may not notice obvious issues or typos. Show it to them as spreads, so they can see what pages will be next to each other.
